La Liga lawsuit dismissed! Spanish prosecutors reject claims of 'illegal' on-field protest against Miami match between Barcelona & Villarreal
Prosecution rules in favour of players
According to EL ESPAÑOL, the National Court Prosecutor's Office dismissed La Liga’s lawsuit against the Spanish Footballers' Association (AFE). The league had sought €8.7 million in damages for a 15‑second pause at kick‑off that was deemed not an illegal strike.
Defeat for the league president
The ruling is a blow to Javier Tebas, who had pursued legal action after mediation failed. He had defended his approach, stating:
“In the circumstances that the stoppage happened, when those things occur, if we don't agree, mediation is necessary. Let's see if we realise that going to the courts is what civilised people do.”
The failed Miami dream and broadcast censorship
The planned Barcelona‑Villarreal match in Miami was cancelled after legal uncertainty. Broadcasters were instructed to hide the 15‑second pause with wide‑stadium shots and a “Commitment to Peace” graphic, but the protest still reached the public.
What next for Barcelona and Villarreal
Barcelona sit top of La Liga with 73 points after 29 games, while Villarreal are third with 58 points. Both clubs now focus on upcoming domestic and European fixtures.
