Kompany, who turns 40 on April 10, reflected on the challenges of sustaining elite performance later in a career. He retired in 2020 due to knee issues, offering a personal lens on Neuer's situation.
"40 is young, but you really need a lot of motivation to keep reaching that level time and again. Mentally, I could have carried on, but my knees had other ideas. Hunger is the most important thing. At some point your body says: carry on or not."
