Müller's World Cup favourite: Spain

The former German international Thomas Müller has named Spain as his personal favourite for the upcoming World Cup this summer in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

The usual suspects are always among the favourites. If I had to pick one team, my gut feeling would be Spain, because as a team they always seem to manage to organise their individual talents into a very fluid and harmonious unit. He said this at a Magenta event in Munich.

Other contenders: France, Portugal, Argentina and Germany

As well as Spain, Müller praised France for its “enormous wealth of talent”, saying they could easily field three squads for the World Cup that would make fans say “Oh, wow!”. He also listed Portugal, Argentina and Germany as other promising teams, adding that he wants to include Germany in that list.

Germany's prospects and Müller's personal view

Speaking about the DFB squad under head coach Julian Nagelsmann, Müller said it’s not as though Germany have to be massive underdogs, but noted the lack of consistency in recent years. He concluded that, logically, his fan’s heart beats for Germany.

  • Thomas Müller made 131 international appearances for Germany
  • He scored 45 goals and provided 41 assists
  • His final appearance came in 2024 in the European Championship quarter‑final defeat against Spain
