Wael Mohya's DFB Dilemma: Record‑Breaking Gladbach Star May Switch to Morocco
Record‑breaking debut for Borussia Mönchengladbach
At 16 years, 11 months and 13 days, Wael Mohya became the youngest player ever to debut for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the Bundesliga, breaking a record that stood for almost two decades. The previous mark belonged to Marko Marin, who debuted at 18 years and 18 days in March 2007.
Mohya is only the eleventh teenager to appear in Germany’s top flight; the youngest ever is Youssoufa Moukoko, who played at 16 years and 1 day on 21 November 2020. The Bundesliga’s minimum age is 16.
International future: Germany or Morocco?
In an interview with kicker, the 17‑year‑old confirmed that the Moroccan Football Association had approached him about a possible switch. He holds both German and Moroccan citizenship but has only represented Germany at youth level.
“There has been contact, yes. But I can’t say any more than that. I haven’t made a decision yet and am taking my time over it. We’ll see how things pan out,” Mohya explained.
He will join coach Hanno Balitsch’s U18 squad next Wednesday as they prepare for the 2027 U19 European Championship, adding to his seven appearances for German youth teams.
Youth career statistics
- Germany U16: 3 caps, 1 goal
- Germany U17: 1 cap
- Germany U18: 3 caps, 2 goals (debut November 2025)
- Borussia Mönchengladbach: 12 games, 1 goal, 0 assists
What the DFB faces
The DFB now faces a heavy blow as it risks losing a player who has already set a Bundesliga record and could become a future senior international.
